The Department of Agriculture has declared the counties of Ashland, Delaware, Holmes, Tuscarawas and Wyandot, Ohio agricultural disaster areas due to excessive rain, floods, high wind, and tornadoes that occurred from February 2 through March 23, 2011. Producers in both primary and contiguous counties are eligible to be considered for Farm Service Agency (FSA) emergency loans (EM) and the Supplemental Revenue Assistance Program (SURE). SURE was approved as part of the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008 and was implemented beginning on January 4, 2010. Regarding EM loans, FSA will consider each application on its own merit by taking into account the extent of losses, security available, and repayment ability. Local FSA offices can provide affected farmers and ranchers with additional information.  Please contact USDA's Office of Congressional Relations at (220) 720-7095 if you have any questions or concerns.  Please click on this link to open the attached document to read the entire letter from the Dept of Agriculture to Governor Kasich .

Buy into Community: The Carey Mercantile Downtown Retail Project

A local group is planning to create a community-owned retail store in Carey. It's a for-profit store and it will be asking residents of Wyandot County and the rest of Ohio – to buy shares of stock. The store, which will likely locate on E. Findlay Street, will be called Carey Mercantile, and will sell clothing, accessories, gifts and miscellaneous items for men, women and children. It will include special sections for items made in Wyandot County, the state of Ohio and the U.S.A. The key to all of this, of course, is the concept that "this store belongs to the community." If you are a shareholder, you might be more interested in being involved in that store, shopping there, and making it a successful fixture in our community.

The store will be modeled after a store in Powell, Wyo., which has been in existence since 2002 and has turned a profit all but one year. The Powell Mercantile has inspired other communities to take matters into their own hands. The folks at Powell have been especially helpful in offering advice and encouragement for the Carey project.

Two board members from the Carey Mercantile met with an attorney last week and filed papers for incorporation. They are now in the process of gathering the necessary information on securities so they can begin selling stock in the near future. Shares will be priced at $500 each with a maximum of 20 shares per person. Interim board members of Carey Mercantile include Tom Eyestone, Ron Dunn, Barb Coppler, Angel Tackett, Steve Frederick, Esther Worst and Steve Zender. If you are interested in offering input or having your name listed as a potential stockholder, get in touch with any of the board members listed above, or contact The Progressor-Times at 419-396-7567.
